ABSTRACT

The rise of the so-called gig economy has reached its fingers into the world of journalism. It is undeniable that the world of journalism has gone through incredible changes in recent years in terms of technology and the way stories are presented across a multitude of platforms, but at the heart of everything people do are good stories – and they will always need genuine, fantastic content. The traditional idea of what a freelance journalist does is someone who sits at home thinking up ideas, pitching them to editors and then writing/creating them. But it is worth pointing out that is not the only way one can be a freelance entertainment journalist. The shrinking number of full-time staff members means a lot of outlets will recruit freelancers to come and do shifts in the office, sometimes for a day, sometimes for weeks or even months at a time.
