ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews forms of assessment for English for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Key Stages. It discusses the characteristics of assessment for learning. It also discusses the removal of National Curriculum levels for assessment and alternative approaches. The chapter presents examples of involving pupils in the assessment process. It examines how to build assessment into curriculum planning. The chapter explores the assessment of speaking and listening and reviews the assessment of reading and writing. It also examines key aspects in relation to effective assessment of English, beginning with a review of different forms of assessment. The chapter discusses the role of each type of assessment in relation to English, including reviewing significant developments in the removal of National Curriculum assessment levels and guidance. Diagnostic assessment is a form of test or assessment that provides information about specific difficulties a child may be having.
