ABSTRACT

Pupils with cerebral palsy may experience handwriting difficulties for a number of reasons: poor co-ordination, problems with visual perception, reduced muscle strength, increased tone, excessive fatigue and limited use of hand/upper limb resulting in poor letter formation and lack of fluency. They will have difficulty maintaining the pace of recording and coping with the volume of recording required. Most pupils will want to have a go at handwriting to be the same as their friends. It will quickly become obvious as to whether handwriting will be a viable method of recording in the long term. For some pupils with cerebral palsy handwriting will never be a viable alternative.
