ABSTRACT
In the religious festivals o f ancient India, North Africa and Greece, and in the European festivals o f m ore recent times, barley was invariably personified as a female deity or grain-m other. I f songs celebrating an Anglo-Saxon or Celtic Demeter once existed, they have vanished without trace; we have, instead, the very masculine Jo h n Barleycorn.
