ABSTRACT

Airlie Castle is roughly nine miles northeast of Blairgowrie, in Perthshire. Its destruction by the Earl o f A rgyll’s covenanting forces took place on 7 Ju ly 1640. For detailed historical references see Ford, and G reig and Keith. The version presented here differs slightly from the four sets given by Child. It is only in Child ’s D-text that Montrose is mentioned, and there he is merely a remote source o f the decision to burn the castle. In the second stanza o f our text he is represented as being actually present on the scene.
