ABSTRACT

The archaeological record clearly shows that the shift to an agricultural way of life in the Middle East was a process rather than a revolution. The transition to agriculture can be traced through a number of stages (see Table 7.1):

1. During the Kebaran and Geometric Kebaran periods, hunter-gatherers living in the region subsisted on a wide range of plant and animal resources. There is no evidence of domesticated plants or animals during those periods, and the remains of brush huts are the only evidence of architecture.
