ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the history of wellbeing, starting with its origins and earliest practical applications. It explains the relevance of keeping an eye on the future workplace, and the massively changing face of modern day working life, proposing secondary and tertiary industrial revolution scales of change, the so-called fourth industrial revolution. The chapter talks about stress, what the signs are and what and why people may experience workplace stress. It looks at resilience training, and what that might include based on the resilience prescription. Best practice examples are illustrated, together with cautionary tales of errors in the field of operationalising wellbeing in the workplace. The chapter presents an overview of the work on leaveism, and what that says about the environments people create in the workplace. It concludes with a glimpse at the likely future world of work, including commentary on flexible, remote and virtual working.
