ABSTRACT
It is more than the music itself that captures our imaginations, however. Popular music serves as a medium through which we recall places, spaces, and activities that we once frequented. Dance venues, cars, movie theaters, and live concerts are just a few of the settings in which music paints the backdrop of our daily lives. While it overtly links time and place, popular music more subtly embeds cultural values into our collective psyche. Consider dance settings of the 1950s versus those of the 1960s, for example. Societal mores were evident in the way in which the dancers moved, touched, and dressed. In fact, it is often in music-related venues such as this that cultural change is formulated. Popular music not only entertains, it also challenges social structures.
