ABSTRACT

This chapter explores people to develop a constructive approach to lesson evaluation that views the lesson plan itself and the 'performance' of the lesson as two sides of the same coin. It links between aspects of educational evaluation and the abilities needed to become a reflective practitioner. Evaluation provides a way for people to understand the activities that go on in their classrooms. Adopting an evaluative stance at the end of each lesson will help you develop the skills of evaluation that will lead to a cycle of reflection and improvement in your teaching. Good communication with students is central to effective teaching and learning and a very useful evaluative skill. Using a range of assessment for learning techniques including self-evaluation and peer-assessment will not only help teachers assess their students' work in a convivial way, but will also give them access to a range of evaluative perspectives that observation and communication alone may not facilitate.
