ABSTRACT

In 2013, Filipina-American actress and film-maker Charlene deGuzman posted a video to YouTube called “I forgot my phone” (https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=OINa46HeWg8). In this two-minute video, Charlene is shown going through her day phoneless (e.g. hiking, eating at a restaurant, celebrating a birthday). In each of these settings, she finds a world absorbed in their cell phones, paying more attention to their small screens than the people and events going on around them. The video went viral: after a few days, it had been viewed more than 10 million times. At the time of this writing (in 2016), the video had been viewed almost 50 million times.
