ABSTRACT

This chapter is an extension of the previous one and here I would like to consolidate and also illustrate some of the issues that were raised there, particularly in terms of "ways of being" within the therapeutic alliance and also the "relational paradigms" or therapeutic roles. To make this more explicit in terms of my work with survivors of sexual abuse, I have divided the chapter into two sections. The first deals with the variables or personal characteristics that I am continually attempting to develop and internalise to greater effectiveness; the second section outlines the primary roles or responsibilities I have learned are essential when helping survivors to work through their experience of sexual abuse.
