ABSTRACT

Many of us have competing voices in our minds, flowing in a contrapuntal fashion, not unlike a Bach fugue. Yet sometimes these voices no longer sound euphonious. We may have slipped into the wrong key or missed a beat, upsetting precarious rhythms. When the dominant theme is discordant, lives can be unpleasant or even chaotic. As therapists, we can encourage our clients to listen to each of their voices and decide whether to fine-tune or tone down the melody. In realizing the role of composer, clients can become more proficient in creating the lives they want for themselves.
