ABSTRACT

This chapter emphasizes romantic attachment in the marital relationship. While most couples get married because of romantic attachment, little is written in the marriage and family therapy literature about romantic love (Roberts, 1992). This chapter views romantic love as an emotional attachment that ebbs and flows during the marriage. In addition, because romantic love is an emotional attachment, it can change only by creating new emotional experiences. The assumption is that verbal or cognitive techniques will not effectively alter emotional attachments.
