ABSTRACT

The focus of this chapter is on organisational design in situations which are complex and volatile. An important objective for the design of work organisation will be the creation of greater stability through securing more effective control over problems which cause major disturbance. This should have the result of both increasing efficiency and improving the job satisfaction and quality of working life of employees. The chapter will show how, when work structures change, other factors in the situation also have to be altered. These will include wage payment systems, methods of supervision, decision-taking procedures and trade union behaviour.
