ABSTRACT

Olympic hosts have to worry about the problem of terrorism and Russia was certainly no exception. However, the case of the Sochi games was different because, at the same time as preparations for the games were proceeding, President Vladimir Putin was reforming the Russian military and expanding its capabilities. Accordingly, this chapter addresses the overall question of security by first dealing with the terrorism issue and then turning to the military aspects. Finally, it addresses the consequences of the state’s enhanced security capabilities for the population.
