ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to provide if adults diagnosed with schizophrenic disorders demonstrate improved task and interpersonal skills and social roles when involved in an individualized intervention based on the Role Development program, in comparison to an intervention based on a multi-departmental activity program (MAP). The MAP is a non-individualized, therapeutic intervention designed to encourage the productive use of time and socialization in a group setting. All participants were asked to sign written informed consent forms describing the research procedures and any anticipated risks. Participants were informed that they were free to withdraw from the research study at any time without prejudicing their access to treatment in any other part of the facility. The occupational therapists complete an initial assessment for every patient. Based on the patient's input and performance during the assessment process, and information from the patient's medical record, the occupational therapist assigns the patient to four of the 15 available groups.
