ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the theoretical and empirical results of a research project aimed at the development of reading comprehension in primary school education (informative texts) in Dutch schools. An experimental reading curriculum entitled Lees je Wijzer (LJW) [Read and Get Wise] was developed, based on Bol (1982). This theory is inspired by neo-Vygotskian developmental and educational theory on the stimulation of cognitive development. Drawing on Bol’s theory a series of teaching experiments investigating the teaching of reading informative texts was developed. In this chapter we give an account of Bol’s theory and the results of the teaching experiments.
