ABSTRACT

Just as the British have revised and reshaped many aspects of the Second World War to suit themselves, they have also forgotten much about it, as was revealed in Chapter 5 on the home front. In terms of Britain’s military effort, the elements least known in the public consciousness are usually those that fail to fit the nation’s self-perception and these elements have spawned few myths. It is also significant that most of these missing campaigns failed to achieve much recognition at the time and thus their absence reflects a continuing trend rather than a new departure. This has certainly helped to create a slanted popular history and has ensured that many veterans of these campaigns retain a residual resentment at their omission from the accepted role of honour.
