ABSTRACT

In response to the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in August 1974 (see below, p. 268), all that Karamanlis could do was appeal for NATO intervention, and then withdraw from N A TO ’s military wing when the appeal was re jected. This move also expressed his desire to distance Greece henceforth from the United States. Here he represented vehement public feeling, which resulted in the assassination on 19 August of the US ambassador to Cyprus, and on 23 December 1975 (by the ‘17th November’ group) of the chief CIA functionary in Greece. Karamanlis also announced, in August 1974, that the tenure of US military bases would be renegotiated; while the United States found it prudent to cancel the ‘home port’ facilities in Athens for the Sixth Fleet.
