ABSTRACT
François Bédarida, the social historian, brought the study of contemporary history to prominence in France in the 1970s and 1980s with his Institut d’Histoire du Temps Présent. He chose the title ‘history of the present’ pardy because, in France, ‘contemporary history’ had come to mean ‘since 1789’.
