ABSTRACT
The previous chapter dealt with early refinements in theoretical thinking. It is now time to move on and consider how the field has developed up to the present day. This will involve a more differentiated approach to notions that were hitherto treated rather vaguely and confusingly. It was necessary, however, to consider those early models if only as a theoretical foundation for the next stage of development.
