ABSTRACT

Throughout the school day principals are faced with issues that require courage. We mediate, sometimes on a minute-by-minute basis, problems among personnel, students, par-

ents, and other community stakeholders. We make statements to the media and must weigh every word. We constantly must concern ourselves with saying and doing just the right thing in just the right way to avoid litigation. As principals, we must know what we believe, we must advocate for others, we must be willing to stay the course to build relationships with actions that value others. Acts of courage brought about the beginning of the end of legally segregated schools in American public schools. Perhaps our acts of courage seem small in the face of this, but I doubt that when Benjamin and Sarah Roberts took the first fearful steps of their momentous walk that they ever dreamed it would ultimately change public schools forever.
