ABSTRACT
Academic literacy: Students need to learn to employ specific strategies to effectively read/use a text, and often these must be taught (or retaught). Examples of this:
Studying the photos on a page before reading the page
Using the dictionary portion at the back of the book
Using the table of contents and index
Reading headings and footnotes
Looking for words in bold print or italics
Using online resource materials to supplement the text
Organizing data
Reading maps and charts
Evaluating the validity and authenticity of sources
Adjusted questioning: When a teacher alters the word choice and complexity of discourse or text to accommodate students’ prior knowledge and current level of knowledge, he or she is using adjusted questioning. This is a simple way to differentiate for individual students or small groups within the same class.
