ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the partner choice strategies of those who faced discrimination by men for their accomplishments. As it was, even if women were to fend off discrimination in the Chinese courtship market, she would still have to deal with discrimination by her own family for her Western partner choice, which would be even more detrimental in the end. The Sex and the City situation will not happen here in Chinese society. In there, the men like their women to be independent career women. But for women who want both a successful career and family life, such compromises apparently have to be made in most relationships that subscribe to traditional gender roles. Although they also had their own shortcomings and challenges, they at least served to resolve the women's most pressing patriarchal dilemmas and to fulfil their traditional economic demands.
