Maurice Baring was a profound Slavophile. He was in Manchuria until after the end of the Russo-Japanese War and was subsequently St Petersburg correspondent to the ‘Morning Post’. He wrote ‘With the Russians in Manchuria’ in 1905 and an extraordinarily perceptive account of ‘Landmarks in Russian Literature’ in 1910.
