ABSTRACT

Now that the reader has familiarity with what and who make up rural America and the ethical imperatives and challenges in rural psychology, the author now turns the reader’s attention to the creation of a sustainable and viable rural clinical practice. Rural psychology is not merely a miniature version of urban-based psychology. The barriers to mental health in rural communities fall into three categories: accessibility, affordability, and acceptability. To overcome these obstacles, rural mental health service provision requires significant out-of-thebox thinking, including partnerships, prevention-based programming, and proximity.
