ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 explores the question of non-compliance and dispute resolution in IEL, covering both institutionalised and less formal methods. The use of amicable settlement of conflicts has become quite extended in IEL for legal disputes involving the international protection of the environment. At the same time, there is a growing recognition of non-formal means to deal with international or transboundary environmental conflicts or disputes, such as the resort to Peoples’ Tribunals or specific ad-hoc commissions instituted outside formal government or state channels.
