ABSTRACT

This chapter is a compilation of informal conference with Mr. F. Bedford Glasier, on the subject of the Lagos Railway, held at the Exchange Station Hotel, on Monday, April 27th, 1903, African Trade Section of the Incorporated Chamber of Commerce. Sir Alfred Jones has alluded to the cost of West African Railways. The expenditure on the Lagos Railway will be under £7,000 a mile. The working of the Lagos Railway has at times been adversely criticised. A policy of low rate was, therefore, deliberately adopted, which it was known would not pay much more than working expenses, but which would become remunerative when the railway was extended, and the length of haul thereby increased; for the present the Government was satisfied that the indirect benefits accruing to the Colony would fully compensate for the developmental rates.
