ABSTRACT

This epilogue presents shows how the theory of autonomy provides ample and consistent moral guidance in the fight against terrorism. Once the readers understand the deep principles that justify the use of force in general, they can apply them consistently and lucidly to any particular case. The chapter seeks a reflective equilibrium between just war theory and principles of domestic law enforcement in order to present a coherent picture of the nature of the struggle against terrorism. In the process, it examines the standard jus ad bellum criteria in reference to the so-called war on terrorism in order to address misconceptions about the morality of our response to terrorism. The chapter further shows how jus in bello charges of disproportionality in war, understood normatively, become absurd, as if one side should give up its advantage over the other in the interests of fairness.
