ABSTRACT

For the most part, the director relies heavily on the production crew for their technical expertise and creative ability. A director can’t possibly know everything necessary to make the film, especially as these days keeping up with changes in production technology is a full-time job. The four major areas of expressive importance a director uses are lighting, camera lenses, color grading looks, and sound recording. Every aspect of lighting carries strong emotional associations that can be employed in drama to great effect. Directors asking for particular lighting effects and wanting to discuss lighting must use the terminology a director of photography understands. The basic lights used in a lighting setup are called the key light, the fill light, the backlight, and the set light. High-key lighting is that in which fill light approaches the intensity of the key light, filling in practically all the shadows, creating a bright overall look with minor or nonexistent areas of shadow.
