The moment Lord Alton departed, Colonel Fraser, after setting his cottage in order, and locking his drawers, having taken money and other necessaries for his journey, which last he put into an old knapsack, set out to the neighbouring hamlet; and recommending the care of his habitation to an old matron, whom he had occasionally employed in domestic offices, he procured from one of the villagers two mules and a guide, to conduct him to Lausanne. /
