ABSTRACT
Reading some foreign languages may require a different eye movement from the left to right, top to bottom of the page which is the normal sequence for English. Play is both the motive force and the means of learning. It is a voluntary, enjoyable activity undertaken for its own sake, essential to every child, through which satisfactory development in all aspects of growth should take place. There are numerous commercially produced record cards for the assessment of reading readiness—but many teachers will prefer to construct their own. The best guide to reading readiness occurs in imaginative and domestic play. Children can be seen imitating grown-ups reading—or 'reading' to an audience of dolls, even if the book is upside down. The teacher's role is to furnish the environment that makes it possible for the pupils to develop reading readiness—and to seize each opportunity as it offers itself to build on this readiness.
