ABSTRACT

One of the more exciting developments in the sustainability space over the last decade has been the rise of mission-driven businesses sometimes also referred to as values-based businesses, green businesses, or for-profit social enterprises. Mission-driven businesses tend to be small- and mid-size companies and, as such, they are not likely to hire dedicated sustainability professionals. MBAs interested in sustainability can find rewarding careers with all of mission-driven businesses. Some of these brands are able to maintain their unique culture and focus on social impact even after the acquisition, but it can be a challenge. If you're interested in consumer goods, a quick walk down the aisles of Whole Foods will give you a great start for company ideas, but it can be harder to identify relevant service companies and B-to-B businesses. Many MBAs find the opportunity to work across teams and disciplines at a smaller company to be exhilarating; others find it challenging.
