ABSTRACT

Many American studies have also been concerned with neuroticism or emotionality, and it must be said that here agreement is much less obvious. Most of the American studies have found a positive relationship between smoking and neuroticism. R. W. Parnell carried out a study in Oxford in 1951 on 308 undergraduates. He found that students of leptosomatic body build were the least frequent smokers, whereas the most frequent ones were pyknics, with athletic body build students somewhere in the middle. Ex-smokers are situated between light and medium smokers as far as degree of extraversion are concerned; pipe smokers are the most introverted of all. Again it will be seen that there is a regular progression in extraversion from non- smokers, through light, medium and to heavy smokers. Ex- smokers are between light and medium smokers and pipe smokers are again the most introverted group.
