ABSTRACT

On January 8,2002, President George W. Bush signed into law the most recent reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Act (ESEA), a landmark piece of legislation designed to catapult student achievement in the twenty-first century through the requirements of No Child Left Behind (P.L. 107-110). This chapter examines the background of this legislated educational reform that has testing and accountability at its fulcrum; examines some specific requirements of the law; explores the possible positive impact on related school and district policies; and finally provides a few realtime examples of initial impact of the law in various states.
