ABSTRACT

In an episode of the television series Ed (Beckerman, Burnett, & Van Patten, 2003), Ed's new girlfriend, Frankie, is jealous of Ed's relationship with his friend Carol. One night, Frankie asks Ed to tell her about his history with Carol. Ed gives Frankie a brief, but accurate, account of their relationship. He tells her that, following the breakup of his marriage, he moved back to his hometown, asked out Carol (the girl he had had a crush on in high school), and she turned him down. Now they are good friends. Frankie is not satisfied with the story. The following night, while they are at a bar with Ed's friends, Frankie finds herself alone with the other women. She mentions to Carol that Ed told her their story. The women start to reminisce about all of the crazy things Ed has done to persuade Carol to go out with him. Over the past 3 years, he delivered flowers to Carol while dressed in a knight's suit of armor, hired a sky writer, made a music video, and threw frozen waffles at Carol's bedroom window. Frankie is furious, and, as they leave the bar, she accuses Ed of lying to her. She recounts all of the things the women said about Ed's behavior toward Carol. Ed argues that he did not lie—after all, the information he gave her was true. He just omitted a few things. Who do you think is right, Ed or Frankie? How much information does Frankie have a right to know about Ed's past relationships?
