ABSTRACT

The first part of this chapter examines an integrated design approach for housing. This can be understood as a set of principles, including bioclimatic principles. The second part discusses the building elements and design required to implement passive design principles. The third section examines passive cooling strategies, which include comfort ventilation, stack and wind-driven ventilation, night cooling through ventilation and radiation, direct and indirect evaporative cooling, and earth cooling. Related issues, such as daylighting and noise abatement, are also discussed. The final part presents a case study: Prosser House on the Gold Coast, south-east Queensland, Australia (see Case study 10.1).
