ABSTRACT

A graphic representation of data abstracted from the banks of every computer in the human system. The roles played by large numbers of human users in making the network what it is can best be glimpsed in the many small details of everyday online life. Sometimes the people are merely harvested for their data, or as data, it is true, but often at the same time they contribute in various ways as curators, and even sometimes as producers. The experimentation people thought would be happening with books is going on more in gaming. In 1985, the year after Neuromancer was published with its first mention of cyberspace, there were only 2,000 computers connected to the Internet. The experimental multimedia work, Agrippa, appeared in 1992, at an important moment of transition just a couple of years before the Internet was to become, for most people, synonymous with the World Wide Web.
