Sydney Olympics. This minor reduction reflects the adverse impact of global events such as 11 September 2001, the SARS health epidemic and the influence of the war in Iraq. Visitor numbers have been on the increase since mid-2003, with traditional markets (UK, USA and Europe) showing steady recovery rates and emerging markets (e.g. China and India) indicating strong growth (DITR, 2004). Annual growth is predicted at 4.8 per cent, with 7.3 million visitors expected by 2010 (Tourism Forecasting Council, April 2004). Domestic travel, whilst remaining relatively static, also shows an increase in both bed nights and expenditure since 1999.
