The purpose of this chapter is to examine the key themes and issues pertinent to the internationalisation of retailing. Drawing from the relevant academic literature, the aims of the chapter are as follows:

to define the nature and scope of retailer internationalisation; to identify the motivations for international expansion; to review the direction of international expansion; to consider the methods of market entry that internationalising retailers adopt; to review the conceptual frameworks which seek to explain retailer internationalisation.
