Sport tourism markets

WithLisa Delpy Neirotti

Whether on a tour or travelling independently, fans will find a way to attend a sport event to support and affiliate with their team (Case study 4.1). For the 2003 World Cricket competition in South Africa the total number of visitors was approximately 30 000; Indian cricket fans accounted for approximately 10 000 of these,Australians for 3000 and Pakistanis for 1000 (Economic Times, 2003). Another type of affinity travel is where travellers visit a destination to feel as though they are a part of the sport. Over 50 000 people tour Madison Square Garden (New York) per year.
