Introduction to sport tourism destination policy and planning

ByJames Higham

Planning is a means of managing change through the taking of decisions to guide future actions. Planning in a sport tourism context is ‘concerned with anticipating and regulating change in a system, to promote orderly development as to increase the social, economic, and environmental benefits of the development process’ (Murphy, 1985: 156). The underlying process for planning is based on an assessment of the current situation, likely changes that will occur in the environment in which the plan is being conducted, decisions on the desired end state, formulation of some sort of action plan and its implementation, followed by monitoring, assessment and adjustment as required (Inskeep, 1991; World Tourism Organization, 1994).
