Back of House Areas and Installations

Characteristics and Types of Area The back of house areas of shopping centres have a tendency to be a hidden world which is generally not accessible to the general public, but is integral to the operation and safety of the building. In a large shopping centre these areas will be used by several thousand shop staff, along with the management, maintenance, cleaning and security staff who assist with the operation of the centre. There will also be external users who will have access to some of the back of house areas, such as delivery vehicle drivers, refuse collectors, utility service suppliers, maintenance contractors and shop fitters. These facilities are separate from the front of house areas, so the visiting public are only likely to encounter them in the event of an emergency and, for this reason, they tend to be basic and unfinished.
