The Cross-Cultural Employee
Growing cultural awareness should cause HR leaders to recognize the under-representation of talented, minority men and women in many professions and trades. A unique strategy to remedy this situation is occurring within the National Science Foundation, which has established a Research Center for Minority Scholars. The Center publishes an RCMS Directory of its programs and directors, as well as the minority summer interns who are working with a Ph.D. level industry mentor. Two national newsletters are also provided; RCMS LINKS is an organ of communication for Research Careers for Minority Scholars. This program is intended to identify and support high-achieving minority and undergraduates in engineering, mathematics, and the sciences who clearly have the potential, interest, and determination for advanced degrees in those fields. RCMS scholars are teamed with faculty mentors, who participate in faculty research, receive research stipends, and are eligible for internships.
