ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the various approaches to wine tourism development in Australia, ranging from the activities and focus of regional associations to state organizations and the development of a national wine tourism strategy. It examines the current nature of wine tourism and the level of tourism involvement of the Australian wine industry; wine tourism development issues in Australia; and the focus and structure of various wine tourism development organizations and associations. Australia has a tradition of small family-owned wineries, many with an annual crush of less than twenty tonnes typically. An indication of the extent of wine tourism development and participation in Australia can also be gauged by the proportion of wineries that offer cellar door and visitor facilities. The supply and nature of value-added tourist facilities at Australian wineries is also an index of the level of tourism participation in the Australian wine industry.
