ABSTRACT

The market size of the league was estimated at £42.9 million in 2003, with a total attendance of 2.9 million (KSSI, 2006) – the largest figures amongst any professional sports league in South Korea. The inaugural season of 1982 recorded 1.4 million total attendances in 240 games played by six teams. This figure rose steeply after the Seoul Olympics in 1988 and peaked at 5.4 million in the 1995 season. The most supported team in the league is the LG Twins with 16 million of the accumulated attendance from 1982 to 2005. Following the Twins, the Lotte Giants and Doosan Bears recorded 13.8 and 11 million, respectively. Given that the LG Twins and Doosan Bears are ground sharing in Seoul, the capital city with a 9.8 million population, the Lotte Giants’ attendance record requires more analysis.
