ABSTRACT

A painting that is intended for travel should be examined by a conservator who will evaluate its present condition in light of the additional risks imposed by handling, transportation, potential exposure to extremes of temperature and relative humidity, plus the dangers of physical, chemical, or biological damage. A review of past condition records and exhibition history may also provide relevant information on specific paintings. As part of the appraisal of each painting (and frame), an assessment should be made of the degree of risk of damage that may be associated with the proposed travel.
