Documents may be retained by companies for only a relatively brief period depending on the nature of the information they hold. Where electronic communications have become dominant, information that might once have been committed to paper may now be held only briefly in electronic form. In general, companies do not have much incentive to retain records other than to conform to legal obligations and to protect their commercial interests. On the contrary, retaining records beyond minimum requirements is likely to entail a company in costs that it may find hard to justify.
