ABSTRACT

Lithium is an effective drug for both treatment and prophylaxis of affective disorder. The mechanism of lithium action is, however, still unknown. Over the past 50 years pre-clinical and clinical studies have focused upon the effects of both acute and chronic lithium on the regulation of neurotransmitter systems, especially the serotonergic system. In this chapter, current literature is reviewed in order to clarify the interactions of lithium with monoaminergic and cholinergic neurotransmitters.
