ABSTRACT
The gene-based approach to the treatment of disease represents one of the most important developments in medicine, with far-reaching possibilities for a wide range of conditions, both inherited and acquired. Such a system offers superior cell-, tissue-or organ-specific targeting (thus improving therapeutic index) and a prolonged duration of action. It is also aimed at treating or eliminating the underlying cause of a disease process and not just the symptoms.
